Body Scan Meditation

Develop deep interoceptive awareness and release physical tension through systematic attention to bodily sensations.

What is Body Scan Meditation?

Body scan meditation is a practice of systematically moving your attention through different parts of your body, noticing sensations without judgment. This practice is a core component of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and has been extensively researched for its therapeutic benefits.

The practice enhances interoception—your ability to sense what's happening inside your body. Research shows that people with better interoceptive awareness have improved emotional regulation, better decision-making, and enhanced mind-body connection. The body scan helps you develop this crucial skill.

Regular body scan practice can help identify and release physical tension, reduce chronic pain, improve sleep quality, and enhance your overall sense of physical well-being. It's particularly valuable for people who experience stress-related physical symptoms or have difficulty connecting with their bodies.

How to Practice

1. Get Comfortable

Lie down on your back or sit comfortably. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to settle in.

2. Start at Your Toes

Bring your attention to your toes. Notice any sensations—warmth, coolness, tingling, pressure, or nothing at all.

3. Move Systematically

Gradually move your attention up through your body: feet, ankles, calves, knees, thighs, and so on, spending time with each area.

4. Notice Without Judgment

Simply observe sensations as they are. If you notice tension, breathe into that area and allow it to soften.

5. Complete the Scan

Continue through your entire body, ending at the crown of your head. Then rest in awareness of your whole body.
